Why Go With GoodHire

As a service suitable for pre-employment background checks, GoodHire must comply with the requirements of the Fair Credit Reporting Act, which means that its results are as accurate as it gets.

While other background check companies we reviewed (which do not comply with the Fair Credit Reporting Act) simply run a search through their records and report on what turns up, GoodHire personnel actively investigates information and gets it independently verified before providing you with your written report. This ensures a standard of accuracy that other online background check websites are simply unable to match.

Bulk Orderas low as $23.99 eachas low as $43.99 eachas low as $63.99 each

There are no two ways about it. GoodHire is very expensive compared to other background check websites we reviewed.

While signup itself is free, you’ll need to pay for each report you request. Pricing will also depend on whether you’re signing up as an individual or as a business.

Prices for businesses are $29.99 for a basic check, $54.99 for a standard check, and a whopping $79.99 for a premium check. You can also get a custom quote if you plan on running complete background checks in bulk.

With that being said, you need to keep in mind that, unlike other background check websites, GoodHire is fully compliant with the requirements of the Fair Credit Reporting Act. This means you can use it to screen workers before you hire them - stuff you’re not allowed to do with the other background check websites we reviewed.

Reports Offered

GoodHire’s three-tier bundle options are designed to reveal important information in an applicant’s past. Using a candidate’s Social Security Number, GoodHire compiles reports that include full names, current addresses, previous addresses and more. GoodHire customers may also choose to include checks that investigate a candidate’s driver license and driving history for an additional fee.

  • Criminal Background Search - Regardless of which background check package a customer purchases, GoodHire includes some criminal background information in every package. Their National Criminal Check offering uncovers basic information about offenses in an individual’s past, while the Sex Offender List report and the Terrorist Watch List report (OFAC) takes the investigation one step further for a complete criminal history search. Additionally, GoodHire customers may purchase County Criminal Court reports for more specific information.

Verifications Include:

  • Identity Verification (SSN, name, address, etc.)
  • Employment Verification (job title, dates of employment, income, etc.)
  • Education Verification (degree, enrollment dates, etc.)

Deeper Checks Include:

  • Instant Criminal Checks - All checks include a basic online check of digital court records. This returns results from sources like sex offender databases, terrorist lists, and major state felonies.
  • In-Court County Records - To provide more complete records, GoodHire can provide in-court checks of county records, which are generally not included in the instant online check.
  • Motor Vehicle Records - Check the driving history of a potential employee. Accidents, DUI, etc.
  • Drug Testing - Urine tests to test for intoxication and substance abuse.
  • Credit Checks - (extra security clearance required) - Check credit history for finance professionals

The information you get will depend on the type of report you pay for.

As a business, you can run three types of report. A basic check includes a detailed address history, social security number trace, criminal check and sex offender check. A standard check adds a domestic terrorist watchlist check and a county court records check for the last seven years. The premium report, which is the most comprehensive, will also verify your subject’s educational qualifications and employment history.

As an individual, you can buy your own report. This will allow you to see what information a prospective employer would obtain you should it run a check and enable you to correct any inaccuracies or missing information that might negatively affect your chances of getting the job.

A starter check will include a comprehensive criminal report, while a basic check will also include information from terrorist watchlists, an address history, and a social security number trace. The standard check, which is the most comprehensive report, will also include county court records for the past seven years. You can also verify your employment history, qualifications and credentials.

Customize Search

From an “options” standpoint, GoodHire is not as flexible as other background check websites we reviewed. However, this inflexibility is necessary in order for the service to be up to the standard required by the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

Running a search on GoodHire works differently than it does on other background check websites. Rather than choosing a type of search, keying in the details and clicking submit, you’ll need to go through a specific procedure.

You’ll need to sign up and get verified, as well as obtain the consent of the person you’re going to look up, before you can carry out a search. You’ll also need to provide a significant amount of information, including legal name, date of birth, and social security number. It’s not possible to carry out a search if any of this information is missing. You’ll need to submit this information yourself or, alternatively, get the person you’re going to look up to provide the information via GoodHire’s e-consent form.

As an individual, you can only search for your own report, and you’ll need to provide several pieces of information to prove that you’re the person you claim to be. This includes your legal name, date of birth and social security number.

Ease of Use

While GoodHire is quite easy to use on the whole, the process is not immediate and straightforward. This is because the service has to comply with the stringent requirements of the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

Unlike other background check sites we reviewed, you’ll need to sign up to GoodHire before you can use it. Luckily, sign up is free and very easy to complete - just choose whether you’re a business or an individual, complete the form with your personal or business details, and click ‘submit’.

If you’re a business, you’ll then need to get verified by providing GoodHire with your company information. Effectively, GoodHire runs a background check on you before you can start running background checks on others. The process takes about one day to complete, after which you can start using the system. You’ll also need to obtain a person’s written consent in order to run a check. You can do this directly from the website by using GoodHire’s e-consent form.

As an individual, you’ll need a fair bit of information in order to run an online background check, including your name, date of birth, full address and social security number. This is done both for accuracy and also to verify your identity for privacy reasons.

Unlike other background check agencies, GoodHire also does not return results immediately. Depending on the type of report you request, it can take a minimum of one day and a maximum of ten business days to receive your report.

Customer Support

GoodHire’s website boasts an impressive knowledge-base with lots of in-depth information about how the service works and what you can do with it. The dedicated resources section of the website really goes above and beyond, and includes articles, blog posts, technical publications, videos, and even a library of downloadable template forms for human resources professionals.

Unfortunately, live support is not available round the clock, but only during set times. This is a pity, especially given how expensive the service is. The toll-free number is available only on weekdays: Monday to Friday from 8:00am to 8:00pm EST. You can also get in touch by filling in an online form.

Bottom Line

GoodHire is incredibly accurate and fully compliant with the Fair Credit Reporting Act, which means you can use it for checks you couldn’t legally use other background check websites for. The tradeoffs are longer waiting periods and a significantly steeper price tag.
